Child Safe Policy

The Salesians of Don Bosco have developed the following Child Safe Policy. This Policy is an overarching document that provides key elements of our approach to protecting children.
Statement of Commitment to Child Safety

The Salesians are committed to providing a child safe and child friendly environment, where children and young people are safe and feel safe and are able to actively participate in decisions that affect their lives.

Our Child Safe Policy Objectives

This policy provides the framework for:

  • the development of work systems, practices, policies and procedures that promote child protection within the organisation the creation of a positive and robust child protection culture
  • the promotion and open discussion of child protection issues within the organisation
  • compliance with all laws, regulations and standards relevant to child protection in Victoria, NSW, SA and Tasmania.

     

CODE OF CONDUCT
KEEPING CHILDREN SAFE

Don Bosco Youth Centre, Brunswick (Updated May 2020)
  1. All Staff, Adult Volunteers, Youth Leaders and Tertiary Students on Placement are required to have as up-to-date Working With Children Card.
     
  2. All new Staff, Adult Volunteers, Birthday Party Supervisors, Youth Leaders and Tertiary Students on Placement are required to go through a face to face Orientation Process, where “Personal Boundaries” and other Child Safety Policies are explained.
     
  3. Staff, Adult Volunteers, Birthday Party Supervisors, Youth Leaders and Tertiary Students on Placement are not allowed to have any social contact after hours, with any Children or Teenagers (under 18 years of age) who attend the Don Bosco Youth Centre, Brunswick. This also means that they cannot have any phone or social media contact with these Children and Teenagers (including mobile phone, facebook, etc).
     
  4. At the end of a session they attend, Staff, Adult Volunteers, Birthday Party Supervisors, Youth Leaders and Tertiary Students on Placement are to collect and/or put out equipment, move equipment or clean up as required, to ensure that all equipment is used safely. This also gives the Children and Teenagers (under 18 years of age) a chance to move off home before the Adult Helpers leave the Youth Centre. Adult Helpers are not allowed to walk home with the Children and Teenagers (under 18 years of age) or have any contact with them after hours.
     
  5. Staff, Adult Volunteers, Birthday Party Supervisors, Youth Leaders and Tertiary Students on Placement are required to maintain appropriate personal boundaries, and to be well-mannered, respectful and good adult role models to all who attend the Don Bosco Youth Centre, Brunswick. They are also required to ensure that all equipment is used in a safe manner.
     
  6. Adults cannot attend one of our “Open Sessions” (After School, Weekends and School Holidays) unless they have Children with them. Parents, Grandparents and Carers are always welcomed and encouraged to attend these sessions with their Children and Teenagers.
     
  7. If an Adult without Children asks to use the Youth Centre Toilets, one of the Staff will politely explain that because this is a Children’s Centre, this is not possible. If they are in real need, we can let them use the toilet upstairs (which is separate to the toilets used by the Children and Teenagers).
     
  8. During our “Open Sessions” (After School, Weekends and School Holidays) Children 10 years of age and under, must always be attended by a Parent or Adult Carer at all times. They cannot be dropped off and picked up. The Don Bosco Youth Centre, Brunswick is not a Child Care Centre.
